3×3: Confidentiality, Control and Transparency at the intersection of Surveillance, Privacy and Design

Researchers in computer science have embraced their own knowledge base for addressing the privacy problems that accrue in an increasingly networked world with a soft spot for surveillance based population management. These technical design efforts have produced a large range of privacy solutions tackling different privacy problems. This diversity, however, makes it difficult to identify which privacy problems the solutions actually address, where they succeed in doing so, and where they run into problems.

Our objective during the talk is to provide a systematic, empirically informed review, mapping, and categorization of the different approaches based on their implicit and explicit assumptions, methods and approaches. We hope to shed light on and continue a much needed discussion on gaps, advantages and disadvantages of technical designs to address privacy and surveillance.
